Only the century is new.
All that is the child
belongs to her.
All that is her
belongs to a yesterday
framed in gray.
She wears mourning,
black serge, high collared;
the boy her only adornment
She hold him high
head even with her own
inviting comparison.
See, see, her eyes command,
this first year
this second child.
